Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence

Our next review is for the New York brewed Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence Stout. The beer is a Belgian Strong Dark Ale type. I received 2 bottles of it from my Father for a Christmas present. With an empty pint glass on the dining room table, I popped the top, and poured it in. At first appearance, I would say the beer is the darkest I have ever seen, and no light is getting through this baby. The head and lacing were probably the best I've seen, and they hung around for minutes on end. The head was dark brown, though again no light came through it. With regard to the aroma, the room nearly filled with the chocolate smell the moment I popped the top. My wife said it smelt as though I was baking chocolate chip cookies. In addition to the ultra powerful chocolate smell, I also detected Belgian spices, some oak, and possibly almonds. Very powerful aroma, but pleasantly strong, and not over powering. Next up the taste test, I took a healthy pull from the glass, and was amazed by how smooth and subtle the chocolate taste was, in contrast to the powerful aroma. The beer body had a good balance too, a little creamy and smooth, and yet a welcomed after shock or little kick to it. The carbonation was fairly light, which is preferred in a stout like this in my opinion, as sometimes too much carbonation can mask hidden treasures for your taste buds. Overall I enjoyed the chocolate stout, and recommend it to anyone.
